On this page you find some useful and necessary terms which may be helpful to develop a better understanding for staircases:

Technical terms in the field "step/tread":

Step/Tread: is the combination of tread/step and riser
Riser: is the part connection the treads/steps
Rise: is the height from one tread/step to another or the total height of the stair from floor to floor

Technical terms in the field "balustrade/railing":


post/newel: Is the starting point of the balustrade in form of a beam, can be in different materials like wood or stainless steel, metal...

handrail: the guiding part of the balustrade where you hand lies on while walking the stair

spindle: is the connecting part between the handrail and the string or the steps, it stabilized the balustrade construction and is required to prevent falling down besides the stair

Technical terms in the filed "stair parts":


wall string: support for treads/steps on the wall side

external string: support for treads/steps on the side to the open room

stair width: measurement from the widest point of the stairs

rise: total height of the stair or height from one step to the next

newel post/starting newel: fixing point for handrail and mosty decorative post on the start of a staircase

newel post/exit newel: fixing point for the handrail and mostly decorative post on the exit of a staircase

balustrade: newels, spindels and handrail put together
